TIGER SOFTWARE FOR BASIC INVENTORY AND MORE
TIGER for Woodlands and Compartments
TIGER for Woodlands and Compartments (TIGER WC) will analyze traditional inventory data and 100% inventories of whatever type of trees you select. Traditional inventories are ones in which a series of points (prism plots) or plots (fixed area) are established in a forested area, and basic tree characteristics, such as species, DBH, and merchantable height, are noted and recorded. A 100% inventory is one in which measurements similar to those done for a traditional inventory are done but only for trees that meet some criteria, such as to be removed in a thin or being a black walnut.
TIGER WC programs have been developed for 20 midwestern and northeastern states. Each program is slightly different in that the list of species changes along with the default volume tables and some other state specific adaptations, but they "look" a lot alike and do essentially the same thing.
TIGER WC allows data for up to 99 plots and a maximum of 45 trees per plot. It accepts data from variable radius (prism) plots and fixed area plots (single or nested). For 100% cruises, it accepts up 4475 trees. For each state, TIGER WC has a list of 45 species by name representing the 45 most common timber tree species and allows the user to name up to 5 additional species that can vary from inventory to inventory. Merchantable height for pulp, sawtimber and veneer can be entered. You can also enter information on tree class (using a USFS code or one that you can create), whether the tree is to be removed in a thin or not (this can be used in simulating thins), future merchantable height for sawtimber and veneer (this can impact future volume and value estimates), crown ratio (this can impact estimated growth), percentage cull (this can estimate volume and value estimates), and total height for each tree.
A detailed manual has been prepared that applies to all states, and a stripped- down version has been developed for each state.
